flexibility and freedom in their lives in an appropriate way, and do you think they are happy?
Another great source of guidance for billions of people around the world says, “Straight is the gate and narrow is the way and few there be that find it.” Could that mean peace and happiness is indeed a scarce thing?
A great mentor of mine said that happiness is an inside job. It’s not something you get from external circumstances or things. It is the result of what’s going on inside. He said that there is almost a 100% correlation between happiness and awareness or levels of consciousness. The more aware person can be happy almost completely detached from externals while the unaware person is unhappy almost no matter what. Nothing you can do for them will make them happy.
Perhaps happiness is, as Earl Nightingale said, the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.
If that little tree were capable of experiencing happiness in a tree-like way, I think it would be happiest when it was reaching and stretching and growing for the light – a worthy ideal, slowly but inexorably realized, in ever-greater degrees but never completed.
