she really doing it for the family? Is it possible there are hidden motives? She loves the attention and the respect. Maybe she enjoys not having to look after her own children.
On the other side of the coin, a person could be without a job and because of a lack of finances, they might be forced to live on state benefits. Suffering at home all day, not enough money for a fancy car or expensive clothes or holidays to exotic places. But how convenient could that be?
If you don’t have a job, you don’t have to go in every day!
Of course these are simple examples not meant to be illustrative of EVERYONE in those situations, but it is certainly true that the truth is seldom in the appearance of things. In order to move up and move on, we have to let go. If you are going to be mentally and emotionally healthy, you need to let go of the opportunities you have to continually seek pity and sympathy from everyone you meet! If you really want to have a great family life, you need to make it a priority and stop doing all the other things that prevent you from sharing experiences and making memories with your family. If you really want a job, you need to let go of all the upsides of not working and spend your time learning how to become a better job candidate.
Some of you, as you read through this chapter, will be offended at the mere suggestion that your misery has any upside whatsoever. How horrible of me to even come up with such an outlandish idea! And then you will seek out people to validate your feelings. You’ll tell them how offended you are. And you will explain again just how awful your lot in life is. Once again you will soak up whatever sympathy is available. Paul Martinelli
