271 Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results;
272 bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.
273 This is but saying that nothing can come from corn but corn,
274 nothing from nettles but nettles. Men understand this law in
275 the natural world, and work with it; but few understand it in
276 the mental and moral world (though its operation there is just
277 as simple and undeviating), and they, therefore, do not
278 cooperate with it.
279 Suffering is always the effect of wrong thought in some
280 direction. It is an indication that the individual is out of
281 harmony with himself, with the Law of his being. The sole
282 and supreme use of suffering is to purify, to burn out all that
283 is useless and impure. Suffering ceases for him who is pure.
284 There could be not object in burning gold after the dross had
285 been removed, and a perfectly pure and enlightened being
286 could not suffer.
287 The circumstances which a man encounters with suffering
288 are the result of his own mental inharmony. The
