538 evolved from within. As he thinks, so he is; as he continues
539 to think, so he remains.
540 A strong man cannot help a weaker unless the weaker is
541 willing to be helped, and even then the weak man must
542 become strong of himself; he must, by his own efforts,
543 develop the strength which he admires in another. None but
544 himself can alter his condition.
545 It has been usual for men to think and to say, "Many men are
546 slaves because one is an oppressor; let us hate the oppressor."
547 Now, however, there is among an increasing few a tendency
548 to reverse this judgment, and to say, "One man is an
549 oppressor because many are slaves; let us despise the slaves."
550 The truth is that oppressor and slave are co-operators in
551 ignorance, and, while seeming to afflict each other, are in
552 reality afflicting themselves. A perfect Knowledge perceives
553 the action of law in the weakness of the oppressed and the
554 misapplied power of the oppressor; a perfect Love, seeing the
