                BW Packaging brand identity launched
MACHINERY MATTERS JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2023 ■ 4
   Barry-Wehmiller’s(BW)global network of packaging divisions – Accraply, BW Flexible Systems, BW Integrated Systems,PneumaticScale Angelus and Synerlink –
have united under the BW Packagingbrand,formerly BW Packaging Systems.
BW Packaging supplies the globalmanufacturingmarket with a wide range of packaging solutions, from standalone machines to fully integrated systems. Through partnerships with its customers, the company develops purposeful packaging solutions to optimise its customers’ processes and backs these with customer support.
In 2023, BW Packaging says it will continue to help solve the packaging industry’s greatest challenges, and is focused on addressing four key pillars in meeting this ambition:
■ Sustainability–infusing sustainable thinking into its business culture and practices;
■ Integration–buildingrobust connections through expertise and IIoT solutions;
■ Automation–prioritising people and safety, while streamlining production; and
■ Performance–improving overall equipment effectiveness with reliable solutions and lifetime customer support. Commenting on the
rebrand, Gordon Wood,
general manager at BW Packaging in Australia, said, “Our customers identify more readily with the BW portion of the platform name than with the longer BW Packaging Systems, therefore the decision has been made to drop the ‘Systems’ and shorten the company name.”
“We are also keeping
the distinct divisional logos, such as Pneumatic Scale Angelus (PSA) for example, where our double seam icon carries a great deal of brand equity,” he said.
“Our branding and that of our sister divisions will also evolve to give us the opportunity to
place more emphasis on well- known brands, such as Hayssen or Angelus, that customers recognise and associate with quality and value, while still referencing the BW name.
“We’re looking forward to those changes and having more opportunities to spotlight these brands in the coming weeks and months.” ■
  Krones affirms net zero commitment
Krones says it is taking its climate strategy to the next level, affirming a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Having set targets in 2020, the company is now taking them even further.
In its climate strategy adopted in 2020, Krones set itself the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused in the company by its own vehicle fleet or production plants, for example by 80 per cent by 2030.
In addition, the Group aims to cut emissions attributable to the upstream and downstream value chain by 25 per cent.
This climate strategy was validated by the independent Science Based Targets
initiative (SBTi) in 2020 in order to verify the effectiveness of the measures taken.
The SBTi confirmed that it will make a contribution towards limiting global warming caused by the greenhouse effect to 1.5°C.
Krones is now taking a further step forward.
“In mid-October, we entered into a commitment with the SBTi to setting
a net zero emission target within the next few months and having it validated by the SBTi,” explained Martina Birk, head of sustainability at Krones.
“This target is to be reached by 2050 at the latest and complements the
2030 emission targets we’ve already specified. We’re now busy developing a science- based net zero target.”
Independent organisations and publications have already given recognition to Krones’ targets and progress in the fields of climate protection and sustainability.

The ‘For Our Planet’ sustainability platform and the Focus news magazine used scientific methods and a comprehensive questionnaire to examine the sustainability targets of German companies.
Krones is one out of only 11 enterprises in the ‘Planet a Machinery Manufacturers’ category, which have won the Top Climate Commitment Award.
And Krones won the 2022 Industry Excellence Award in the field of sustainability at the Gulfood Manufacturing, the biggest trade fair for food and beverage processing in the Middle East, Africa and South-East Asia region.
This award honours companies for their innovative vigour and outstanding contributions to the sector, and for helping their customers pave the way for a sustainable future.
“The independent analyses and accolades confirm our sustainability targets and our future-driven corporate strategy,” said Birk.
“The overriding goal driving innovation in all our new developments and design enhancements is not only digitalisation, but also the requirement for sustainability, which we have systematically integrated into our entire portfolio, including the fields of process technology, filling and packaging technology, and intralogistics.” ■
