Network,” BAE Systems Australia CEO Gabby Costigan said to ADM. “Despite the continued challenges of CO- VID-19, we have worked hard to continue to deliver world leading technologies for the ADF and to look for new op- portunities to support the country continue its transition to a high technology economy.”
“Thales Australia’s performance reflects four decades as a strategic partner with the ADF and an Australian defence industry heritage stretching back more than a century,” Thales Australia CEO Chris Jenkins said. “Our people and our 1,840 Australian suppliers have shown remarkable re- silience through 2020 and 2021 to maintain support for the ADF through key sovereign industry capabilities.”
Meanwhile, Safran is the largest SME by turnover (the local company qualifies as an SME despite the size of its overseas parent) whilst NT-based Sitzler is the largest ANZ- owned SME by turnover. The company was recently appoint- ed as the managing contractor for the $747 million Northern Territory Training Areas and Ranges Upgrades Project.
“We are happy to see Safran in the Top 40 Defence Con- tractors/Top 20 SMEs again this year,” the company said. “We remain committed to growing our business in Australia and supporting our defence customers in the Australasia region.”
“2021 saw Sitzler work on a range of high-profile complex projects in support of the United States Force Posture Ini- tiative, the Navy Capability Infrastructure Sub-Program, Air 7000 Maritime Patrol Aircraft Replacement, facilities to support Navy in the north, and several government stim- ulus packages,” a spokesperson said.
The minimum turnover required to make it into 2021’s Top 40 survey is $75 million, an increase from $66.3 million in 2020. The minimum turnover to qualify as a Top 20 SME has also increased from $24.6 million to $25.3 million, though the minimum turnover to qualify in the Top 20 ANZ-owned SMEs has lowered from $12.3 million to $11.7 million.
There are too many success stories in these figures to cover in one article, though a few stand out. Downer EDI has marked an increase of $200 million; Penten, EPE, Ey- lex, and Atlantic and Peninsula have doubled turnover from 2020; Daronmont Technologies have doubled turnover since 2017-2018; Varley has more than doubled since 2015; SME Gateway has increased turnover by 53 per cent; and first-time entries include Informatech, Rob Dobson and As- sociates, R&R Murphy, AMW Professional Services, Omni Executive, and Waanyi Shamrock United.
