“EPE had strong growth in both revenue and staff with staff numbers doubling from 20 to 41 during the period,” Managing Director Warwick Penrose said. “Growth re- sulted from the delivery and support of a specialist CBRNe capability to Land 3025 Phase 2, Land 2110 and capability sustainment to the Counter CBRNe fleet; a next generation bombsuit to ADF and NZDF; counter-IED capability and unmanned systems to ADF for futures and experimenta- tion; and funding for Defence Innovation Projects.”
Several of those companies also marked major increases in overall headcount and their percentage of female em- ployees, including SME Gateway and Penten.
“SME Gateway is proud to see a 53 per cent jump in turn- over and a doubling in our headcount from the previous year,” SME Gateway Managing Director Stuart Althaus told ADM. “While COVID presented ongoing challenges to our entire defence community, we saw the opportunity to grow and expand the business in line with the govern- ment’s aim to keep the economy ticking over by speeding up a range of defence programs.
“We also saw our female workforce percentage hit over 50 per cent, something I’m very proud of.”
“Penten has once again grown immensely in the last 12 months,” CEO Matthew Wilson said. “Our defence related turnover more than doubled, from $7.1 million in 2020 to $14.5 million in 2021. A major contributor to this increase was the 78 per cent higher demand for our secure mobil- ity products and services which assisted Defence personnel work securely and remotely during multiple lockdowns.
“We’re also pleased that our newest business unit; tacti- cal communications security brought in over $6 million in its first year of operation. This indicates the clear interest in sovereign and secure communications technologies.”
A number of companies have also increased their Australian Industry Capability (AIC) spending, notably Aurecon Aus- tralasia ($9 million) and NIOA ($8.95 million), whilst others have increased exports (Leidos, for example, by $2.9 million) or R&D investment (Beca, by $2 million). Babcock Australia even recorded 90 per cent of total turnover as AIC.
A few companies saw decreases from 2020 figures that require additional context. For example, Lockheed Martin Australia’s turnover in 2021 decreased $108 million from 2020 – however, the 2020 figure had increased $184 mil- lion from the year prior, meaning the company’s revenue re- mains higher than it was in 2019. Lendlease, RUAG, Bird- on, NIOA and Australian Defence Apparel have also seen
