CUT AND PASTE
COLOUR LAYERING
COLLAGE will never go out of style, and 2022’s take on the design mainstay has a stunning focus on layering. Whether it’s with shapes or colours, the layering of elements gives depth and intrigue to flat design.
The beauty of this
design style is that it can
be as clean and crisp or raw and organic as you like, depending on your brand values and product. For example, the label designed by Brisbane-based artist Xana Denruyter for Innocent Bystander’s first natural white wine gives off ‘70’s disco’ vibes with bright colours and plenty of organically shaped colour splotches and lines overlaid on one another.
On the other hand, Melbourne-based cocktail company, Home Grown Drinks, uses more geometric shapes and saturated colours on its labels to give a more of a contemporary edge to its colour block collages.

 MAXIMAL INSIDE, MINIMAL OUTSIDE
SOMETIMES the most memorable kind of brand experience is the one you least expect, and this design style promises exactly that. Maximal inside, minimal outside packaging designs carry through a simple brand aesthetic from the outside but then elevate it with intriguing colours, bold shapes, and maximalist illustrations. Creating that unexpected feeling of joy and excitement when customers open a non-descript package will certainly make a lasting impression.
Recently launched alcohol brand, Tanica, is leading the charge on this trend in a beautiful way. Featuring its signature peach colour and recogni- sable wordmark, Tanica’s elegantly understated boxes open to reveal a beautifully crafted interior that makes unboxing the blended botanical spirits double the fun.
