Passionate about design excellence, Cormack was the instigator of the long-run- ning Cormack Innovation Awards pro- gramme for industrial design students, which encouraged out-the-box design thinking in important areas like accessi- bility and sustainability, while providing training and internships to the students. For the 15 years the programme was in place, it provided an essential link between industry and academia.
In his business, Cormack remains com- mitted to investment in manufacturing in Australia, and focusing on design excel- lence to reduce material usage while ensur- ing closures perform optimally.
He has driven Cormack Packaging to be a pioneer and leader in child resistant caps, to harness the benefits of its TVL closures to reduce plastic usage by over 50 tonnes per year, and has focused on accessible design to make the family of closures far more Arthritis-friendly.
Under his leadership, the company has recently made two solid acquisitions, and continues to invest in innovation and auto- mated technology and robotics across its facilities.
Mark Daws
For the past 15 years Currie Group direc- tor of Labels & Packaging Mark Daws has been consistently championing a new approach in converting and printing for packaging, through implementing a digital strategy, with significant success.
Today there are print businesses in vir- tually every state and island across Australia and New Zealand which have pivoted their operations to digital printing on the basis of implementing the vision and new technology solutions Daws has presented. This has enabled them to offer new packaging options to meet the evolv- ing demands of the market, options which in turn have been in part at least respon- sible for their business growth, and for that of their clients.
Daws has been able to show the local market how digital solutions can deliver the essential packaging requirements of protection, security, and product fidelity, while combining them with speed, versa-
tility, versioning and personalisation.
He has also been instrumental in train- ing the packaging industry in digital pouch making and printing, and has lectured and demonstrated technology to students of the
Australian Institute of Packaging.
The digital solutions Daws presents dom- inate the ANZ market, and for his own com- pany Currie Group, which has its roots in commercial print, his efforts have resulted in labels and packaging becoming its big-
gest division.

Dingley was elected to the APPMA Board in 2002 and held several positions before chairman. Since taking on that role, APPMA has continued to grow and develop as an association, and AUSPACK – the association’s ‘centrepiece’ has become the premier tradeshow for our industry. Under his leadership, APPMA’s engagement and participation within our industry, both domestically and internationally, has advanced in leaps and bounds, and its broader industry contribution is signifi- cant, supporting initiatives like Oz Harvest, Fight Food Waste CRC, and edu- cational programmes to drive upskilling in the machinery sector.
A driver for advancement in the packag- ing and processing industry, Dingley con- tends the Industry 4.0 digital evolution will change the game for suppliers and manufacturers alike presenting both the biggest challenge, and the biggest
opportunity, for businesses within our industry to plan for and adapt to. It is his mission to ensure his own company, and the wider packaging and processing machinery industry, is equipped to opti- mise this inevitable change.
Brooke Donnelly
Brooke Donnelly has spent her career working in product stewardship, collec- tive impact, recycling and sustainability. In her current role as CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), Donnelly leads APCO’s strategic direction to ensure effective collaboration between industry, government and consumers to drive significant positive environmental and circular economic activities for Australian communities.
Under Donnelly’s leadership, APCO is spearheading the development of a circu- lar economy for packaging in Australia. This includes ensuring the delivery of Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets and the ANZPAC Plastics Pact by driving change in the packaging value chain to reduce and redesign packaging for recyclability or reuse, achieve higher collection rates and improve the quality of recycled material streams and demand for recycled content.
Donnelly has announced a number of important APCO initiatives this year alone, including a new consumer cam- paign to raise awareness around recycling (see page 76).
