Ross Read
Maverick, pioneer, innovator: Ross Read, founder and managing director of Read Labels & Packaging, is all three. In 2000 he established the first label making company in Australia to offer only digital print, and in the ensuing two decades has success- fully delivered the technology to flexible packaging, enabling small food and bever- age brands to create a big impact on shelf.
As the first label printer to focus on a digital-only offering, Read quickly grew his customer base in the boutique wine indus- try, and also among food and beverage start- ups, by addressing the need for labels with high quality graphics, produced in short runs and for multiple SKUs. Once the label- ling side of the business was running smoothly, he then went on to lead the way in developing a digital flexible pouch offer- ing, again for the artisan and SME food market, investing in new technology to print and convert stand-up pouches and centre-seal bags, produced in short runs with a quick turnaround. He has shown vision, foresight and leadership in advanc- ing the uptake of digital printing for pack- aging by SME brand owners.
Apart from helping small companies get their brands on shelf in impactful packaging, he has also opened the doors of his purpose- built facility in Melbourne to students and visiting lecturers from the Australian Institute of Packaging, playing his part in educating packaging professionals on the value and ben- efits of digital printing technology.
