& Recycling Technologies. The company owns and manages the PREP software, a standard framework for assessing the recyclability of consumer packaging for the Australian, New Zealand and UK markets.
Peyton’s vision designed and created the Packaging Recycling Evaluation Portal (PREP) that drives the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) program. His vision and determination saw an idea over 10 years ago become an industry-driven pro- gram which continues to evolve and grow.
More recently, Peyton and PREP design have played an integral role in the devel- opment of Roll ‘n’ Recycle, a new system to recycle semi-rigid plastics through the existing kerbside recycling system.
Pierre Pienaar
With 30 years’ experience in the packag- ing industry, Pierre Pienaar has been instrumental in the continued growth and success of packaging education and train- ing around the world – as AIP Education Director and in more recent years as the president of the World Packaging Organisation. A hallmark of his leadership style is his constant availability to the wider industry.
Pienaar has given of his time and knowl- edge to assist developing countries with packaging education and training and has lectured in the technology and science of packaging at various universities across the globe. He is the recipient of two hon- orary professorships from international universities.
Closer to home, a few years ago Pienaar accepted the toughest role of all which was filling industry doyen Harry Lovell’s shoes and leading the education portfolio for the Australian Institute of Packaging across Australasia.
Pienaar’s drive and commitment to improving packaging education across the world is remarkable. Andrew Pooch
Andrew Pooch is managing director of Tetra Pak Oceania, the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Tetra Pak works with its cus- tomers and consumers in more than 160 countries to provide safe food. Bringing a wealth of experience from over 30 years in the industry across Asia Pacific, Pooch believes that the key to success is curios- ity, passion and diversity.
Since starting in Oceania 60 years ago, sustainability has been key to Tetra Pak’s business strategy and operations. Under Pooch’s leadership, Australia has seen innovative, leading sustainable packaging solutions launched. In March 2019, Tetra Pak introduced the first carton-bottle for water. In the same year, together with Australia’s oldest and most iconic dairy, Brownes Dairy, Tetra Pak launched the first fully renewable carton package in Australia. The Tetra Rex Plant-Based pack- age was acknowledged with the Sustainable Packaging Design Special Award at the 2020 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards.
In welcoming funding for recycling infrastructure in the recent federal budget, Pooch said recycling plays an important role in sustainability, but so too does the sourcing and transport of the product.
He believes there’s a need to expand the focus beyond solely the end-of-life of prod- ucts, such as packaging. It is important to also look at the entire value chain to effec- tively contribute to lowering our carbon footprint and driving real climate action.
Tony Randall
Tony Randall is a well-known figure in the packaging industry. An avid supporter of the APPMA and the manufacturing indus- try, he is, according to his peers, an advo- cate for trying new things, thinking outside the box and taking a gutsy approach.
Randall heads up the GTAP Group at SMC, a group dedicated to supporting the needs of original equipment manufactur- ers (OEMs).
Randall was instrumental in setting up the OEM Service for SMC, after his reali- sation that OEMs require a more specific and dedicated sales and service approach. This not only benefitted the business, but was a step-change for OEMs, facilitating ease of use and integration in their machin- ery builds and installations.
The Priority OEM service provides cus- tomers with key enablers to keep turn- around time and costs per job efficient. Services such as a 20 minute call back, on-site support, engineer to engineer com- munication, and even designing and
