Chiller for high lift applications
JOHNSON CONTROLS HAS added the Quantech QWCA water cooled screw chiller to its portfolio.
The Quantech QWC4 chiller uses variable speed drive technology to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions by as much as 30 per cent when compared to traditional chillers.
Throughout most locations, the variable speed drive saves energy during 99 per cent of operating hours spent at off-design condi- tions, which include reduced load and/or re- duced entering condenser water temperature.
Since the Quantech QWC4 screw chiller is capable of handling a higher-pressure lift than a centrifugal chiller, it can be used in both thermal-storage and heat-pump applications.
The variable speed drive technology pro- vides the chiller flexibility in handling high- lift applications with the highest efficien- cies available.
This allows the chiller to use a wide range of heat-rejection methods, including an open
cooling tower, dry cooler, adiabatic cooler, heat recovery or heat pump.
The Quantech QWC4 chiller also reduces en- vironmental impacts by directly managing re- frigerant charges and potential leak points. The chiller utilizes the R-134a refrigerant, which has zero ozone-depletion potential, and features an innovative design that reduces the number of potential leak points by 35 per cent when com- pared to conventional compressor designs.
It also incorporates a falling-film evapora- tor that allows for refrigerant charge to be lowered by as much as 30 per cent compared to standard chillers.
The Quantech QWC4 chiller supports OpenBlue Healthy Buildings by Johnson Controls – a complete suite of connected so- lutions that delivers impactful sustainability, new healthy occupant experiences and re- spectful safety and security to many indus- tries including workplaces, hospitals, schools, enterprises and more.

Calculator for fridgies
GLOBAL REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTOR, Na- tional Refrigerants, has developed a comprehen- sive pressure/temperature calculation tool with several special features to make the HVACR tech- nician’s job easier.
The app can calculate a simple pressure/tempera- ture relationship or calculate superheat/subcool temperatures.
The user can input pressure or temperature(s) on any screen and the other values are automatically cal- culated and displayed.
For refrigerant blends, both saturated vapour and saturated liquid values are displayed. Within the su- perheat/subcool screen, a graphic display for blends will show the entering, mid-point, and outlet tem- perature as well as line temperature.
The app displays imperial and metric units and includes automatic altitude correction.
It contains all the traditional refrigerants as well as all the new emerging
lower GWP alternatives,
HFOs and hydrocarbons.
Users can easily choose from a “favourites” refrig- erants list and it includes supplementary informa- tion about the refrigerants and links to the National Refrigerants website.
The P-T Calculator can be downloaded free from the App Store or Google Play.
