In the spirit of good label design
Squad Ink branding agency recently scooped four Golds and three Masters awards at the 2021 Design & Packaging Masters Awards.
Founded by creative duo and twin brothers Matthew and Terry Squadrito, Squad Ink has forged a reputation for creating some of the most sought after artisan food and beverage brands in Australia.
Distinctive labels were central to the winning packaging design, and one examples from the gin category that scooped a Masters Award was for distilled spirit Seabourne Coastal Dry Gin., from a newly launched distillery based in Noosa on Queensland’s tropical coast. Here, the agency created a custom internal punt feature within the bottle, and the label features a specialty Manter Cotone Bianco stock, printed with
deep blue and rooftop dimensional emboss, to proclaim Seabourne in crisp clarity.

 Gin brand treads softly
Local organic winemaker Fourth Wave launched two new gin flavours in its Tread Softly brand, which sport sustainable, feminine and natural designs by Denomination.
Given that the brand had already been established, Denomination wanted to develop an approach that built on existing brand recognition and eco credentials, while

also bringing something totally new to the spirits sector, which is known for its innovative approach to labelling.
The small front labels on the Tread Softly Natural Botanicals Dry Gin and Delicate Botanicals Pink Gin brands are fashioned from natural paper stock, and include a tiny illustration of a ladybird, encouraging consumers to lean in and investigate.
According to Denomination, many different label dyeline templates were trialled to ensure that the barcode and
mandatories would fit on the stopper, which also serves
to tell a story about the the product, with Cast Gloss stock chosen as it performed best in adhesion and ability to curve around the stopper and neck.
Denomination found that the final dyeline template was beneficial as it provides security without the use
of plastic, which is in line with the brand’s sustainable positioning.
The neck label was produced by Ultra Labels, with bottle printing completed by DekorGlass.

Print Excellence
Multi-Colour Victoria earned the title of 2021 National Print Award Label Printer of the Year for its Tanglin Mandarin Chilli Gin label. The double-sided label was printed using a reverse four colour process print on Raflatac Clear PP stock with Raflatac Silver PP laminated over the top, then printed
using a four colour process and opaque white. Printing, prepress and finishing was done by Multi-Colour Victoria.
CCL Label won gold in the embellishment category for its Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Matured Shiraz label. This design combined solid areas
of foil with fine screen detail on
the bottom panel of the label, printed on Avery, Estate 8 stock. Fine detail in the foiling was integrated to give premium cues on shelf, with embossed highlights added to create more dimension to the image and branding. A high build screen provided a finishing touch to accentuate the bold red ink.
