QUALITY CODING FOR A QUALITY DRAM
✷ PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
PRODUCT NEWS
MAKING permanent marks on gin and whiskey bottles operating at a line speed of 2100 per hour, the Linx CSL30 laser system is providing clear and sharp codes for the premium Scottish Bruichladdich Distillery Co.
Bruichladdich produces premium whisky made from barley grown right next to the distillery on the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides.
The permanent coding provides dates and traceable origins on black or coloured bottles ready for the export market.
Originally, Linx CSL30 (30 Watt) laser coders were installed on the Botanist Islay Dry Gin clear bottles. The laser etches two lines 5mm in height on the bottom of the glass gin bottles to meet the standards demanded by the market.
Bruichladdich Bottling Hall manager Jonathan Carmichael said, “As a producer of
premium spirits, it’s vitally important that the codes on our bottles are clear and sharp and in keeping with the brand’s expectations.
“Another key factor in the decision to install a laser coder was the low maintenance required, meaning less downtime in production. For these reasons we’ve not hesitated to install a CSL30 on our whisky line as well.”
Ease of installation, low maintenance costs and no consumables required, the Linx CSL30 provide clear permanent codes on glass bottles for premium products. Linx lasers are available in Australia through Raymax Applications.
SWITCHES NOT SHUTDOWNS
The FLT93 Series Flow Switch from
Fluid Components International (FCI) provides a reliable early warning alert to the potential of dry running conditions, cavitation and other pump issues that
can lead to emergency shutdowns, service interruptions and unplanned costly maintenance.
Pumps are expensive to operate and costly to maintain, especially when dry running conditions suddenly occur due to system variable demand, leaks, clogs or other problems that could affect a pump’s seals or bearings. The resulting damage can require expensive, time-consuming repairs, overhauls or replacement at an even higher cost.
With its no moving parts design, the FLT93 offers a highly robust scheme for pump protection with its dual alarm capability. It reliably monitors the flow and temperature of liquids, gases, slurries and more.
The sophisticated FLT93 Switch is a dual-function instrument that indicates both flow and temperature, and/or level sensing in a single device. Dual 6A relay outputs are standard and are assignable to flow, level, or temperature.
The FLT93 Switch can be specified in either insertion or inline styles for pipe or tube installation.
Highly dependable, FCI’s versatile FLT93 Switches are ideal for applications in many demanding process industries. They also used extensively with or without SIL2 certification in a wide variety of applications in food and beverage manufacturing.
The switches are available through AMS Instrumentation & Calibration.

DISCHARGING FOR THE FLOW
FLEXICON'S new Bulk-Out BFC Bulk Bag Discharging System promotes the flow of bulk solid materials that have solidified during storage and shipment, automatically discharges the
material, and allows manual additions of ingredients from sacks, drums, and other containers.
A cantilevered I-beam with electric hoist and trolley lowers a bag lifting frame to floor level for rapid attachment of the bag to patented Z-CLIP bag strap holders, and then hoists and rolls the bag into the safety frame, eliminating the need for a forklift.
The integral conditioner consists of two hydraulically actuated rams with specially contoured conditioning plates that press opposing sides of the bulk bag. A Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) housed in a NEMA 4 (IP 56) enclosure controls the stroke and number of ram actuations. The electric hoist can be used to raise and lower the bag for conditioning at varying heights.
Models are available in carbon steel with durable industrial coating and stainless-steel material contact points, or in all stainless steel finished to industrial, food, dairy or pharmaceutical standards.
INSPECTION FINDS THE SWEET SPOT
THE Mettler-Toledo X34C X-ray inspection system delivers a cost-effective inspection of individual packs and bars immediately after flow-wrapping or pack sealing.
It is based on three design principles: a compact footprint of just 700mm with an integrated reject; high speed capabilities at 120 metres per minute; and precise performance using an optimised focal distance of the 0.4mm diode detector and 100W Optimum Power Generator. These maximise the probability of detecting small contaminants and help to reduce the false reject rate.
Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection head of Global Sales & Product Management Mike Pipe said they expected manufacturers of small confectionery products and snacks would love the system.
“The high-speed inspection that the compact X34C gives them, as improved detection sensitivity allows the technology to inspect and reject single bars at fast speeds straight after they exit the flow-wrapper.
“This not only reduces waste, because a single bar rather than the entire multi-pack can be rejected, but it also enables the manufacturer to maintain high levels of productivity at this critical point of the production line,” Pipe said.
The X34C shares many of the same features and advantages as other models in the Mettler- Toledo Safeline range of X-ray systems including easy-to-use operating software, ContamPlus, with automated product set-up reducing the need for operator training, while increasing production up-time and product safety.
