 Where materials,
machinery and tech converge
Walking the halls over the four days, the PKN team discovered an inspiring trail of mechanical, creative and innovative materials, machinery and technology. Here are some of our discoveries.
SUSTAINABILITY was an all-pervasive theme in the materials exhibits. A visit to the Opal stand was a visual delight with the blaze of colour and abundant offerings on display, and the stand itself providing an ‘out of the box’ experience, built from the
ground up with the back wall, booths and stand-ups all constructed from cardboard made by Opal.
Chris Daly, executive GM Opal Group Australia, took us through the stand, pointing out the group’s digi- tal printing expertise; paper-based punnets for food and fresh produce, which feature an acetate film pro- duced from wood pulp; Bandall’s high-tech ability to band and brand packaging simultaneously; linerless boxes and lid for meat, protein and seafood; Opal’s recycling solutions: and Olympic Scholastic augmented reality memory games for children via Opal’s OlyLearn app; and OpalVIEW technology.
When Biogone company founder Ross Headifen gave us a tour of the stand, he showed us a range of
plastic packaging solutions that are biodegradable in landfill, as well as recyclable. These included bin lin- ers, tapes, bubble wrap and a range of warehousing solutions.
Moving on to the O F Packaging stand, Jessica Ansell, marketing manager, spoke to us about the recent Diamond award winning product in Dow’s Packaging Innovation Awards, the high barrier kerbside recyclable muesli pouch for Brookfarm using the

Roll ‘n’ Recycle program, as well as Zero Co’s returnable and recyclable pouch innovation, which has also won multiple awards.
A tour of the Detpak stand by Romano Bolzon, national group sales, revealed the company’s fibre- based two-minute Fantastic noodles cup (ARL kerbside recycling), new fibre-based packaging for fruit and vegetables which is currently being trialled by Woolworths in Double Bay stores, and its new RecycleMe fibre- based packaging.
Mark Emmett, CEO and owner of HMPS Group, took us on a tour of what he described as the “biggest stand ever”. Having recently acquired Pro-Pac and Integrated Machinery to complete its now full-service offering, Emmett pointed out that HMPS used the show as a platform to showcase its ‘bag it – box it – wrap it’ solutions. Also on-stand was the wraparound case packer by HMPS, a semi-auto- mated stretch wrapper and a vertical form fill seal machine.
A walk through of the Jet Technologies stand, led by Daniel Malki, GM, Packaging, revealed the company’s flexible packaging and machinery verticals, from coffee packaging to dairy and dips, ready meals, and wine and spirits, dem- onstrating how sustainability came through every offering on show. Malki was excited to share that, on day one of the show, a Goglio G21 FFS coffee packaging machine had been purchased by coffee roaster The Little Marionette.
