{ GLOSSARY }
With repeated use of narcotics, tolerance and dependence develop.
Tolerance occurs when the person no longer responds to the drug in the way
that person initially responded. Stated another way, it takes a higher dose of the
drug to achieve the same level of response achieved initially.

Physical Dependence is not equivalent to addiction, and can happen with
the chronic use of many drugs—including many prescription drugs, even if taken
as instructed. It occurs when the body adapts to the drug, requiring more of it to
achieve a certain effect and eliciting drug-specific physical or mental symptoms if
drug use is abruptly ceased.
