Masjid Agung Palembang is a historic mosque with a unique architectural design.
It is a combination of Javanese, Chinese, and European styles. This mosque is an
important witness to the glory of the Palembang Sultanate.

The roof of the mosque has a limas shape. At first glance, it looks like a Chinese temple
because of its golden ornaments. The nearby minaret has a cone shape. The thick
concrete walls, large doors, and big pillars at the front show European colonial

         architecture.
Inside the mosque, the atmosphere feels calm and traditional, similar to old
mosques in Java. The main pillars are strong and made of green wood with beautiful
carvings at the bottom. In the center of the mosque, there is a large hanging lamp that

lights the room. Near the mihrab, there is a pulpit with Palembang-style carvings that add
         beauty to the interior.

Masjid Agung Palembang is not only beautiful but also has a long history. In the
past, Palembang was an important center for trade and the spread of Islam. During the
time of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I, the mosque was rebuilt after being destroyed in a
         war in 1659.

The construction of the mosque took about ten years and was completed in 1748. At
first, people called it Masjid Sultan. The mosque is located in a very strategic place, near
the palace and surrounded by rivers.
