Over time, the mosque has been renovated several times. A tower was added in
1753, and new buildings were added around the main mosque. In 1970, a dome was
added, but later it was replaced with a limas roof to show Palembang traditional culture.

The main building of the mosque is square-shaped and supported by sixteen pillars. Four
of them are the main pillars that support the roof. Around the main building, there are
additional buildings that still follow the original architectural style.
Around the mosque, there are green gardens, a fountain, and many facilities such

as parking areas, a hall, offices, and a library. The mosque also has the largest carved
Qur’an in the world, called Al-Qur’an Al-Akbar, made of wood.

Nowadays, Masjid Agung Palembang is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia. It
is a national mosque and a cultural heritage building. Located in the center of
Palembang city, this mosque is easy to visit and is an important religious and historical
         place.
