A Traditional Dance from Palembang
Directions : Read the following text.
Tari Tanggai is a traditional dance from Palembang, South Sumatra. This dance is
performed to welcome special guests. Because of this, Tari Tanggai is also called a
welcoming dance. It is often shown at traditional Palembang weddings and official events.
Tari Tanggai shows respect and friendliness to guests. The people of Palembang believe
that guests should be treated well, like kings. In the dance, one dancer offers sirih to the
guests as a sign of respect.
The dance movements are divided into three parts. They are the opening movement,
the main movement, and the closing movement. The opening movement welcomes the
guests. The main movement shows the beauty of the dance. The closing movement ends
the dance politely.
Tari Tanggai is accompanied by traditional music from Palembang, such as drums,
gongs, accordions, and violins. The music helps the dancers move in rhythm. The dance is
also accompanied by a song called “Enam Bersaudara.”
The dancers wear traditional Palembang costumes. They wear dodot on the upper
body and songket on the lower body. They also wear accessories such as necklaces and
hair ornaments. A special accessory called tanggai is worn on the fingertips. It makes the
finger movements look more beautiful.
