The Civil Lawsuit
A civil proceeding is any proceeding other than a criminal
proceeding.
Many rumors circulated after the civil lawsuit was settled-
that Michael Jackson had bought his way out of a criminal in-
dictment. The civil lawsuit settlement had nothing to do with
the criminal investigation. It is my hope that this chapter will
give you a clearer understanding of the civil proceedings sur-
rounding this case and how the settlement had no affect on
the outcome of the criminal investigation.
The Civil Complaint
Dr. Chandler hired Mr. Feldman, who was a top civil at-
torney and had served as the head of the Los Angeles Trial
Lawyers Association. On September 14, 1993, Feldman filed a
thirty million dollar lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court,
Santa Monica branch, against Michael Jackson for:
1.) sexual battery; 2.) battery; 3.) seduction; 4.) willful mis-
conduct; 5.) intentional infliction of emotional distress; 6.)
fraud; and 7.) negligence. The complaint showed (the 13-year
old boy), a minor, by and through his Guardians Ad Litem E.
Chandler and J. Chandler as plaintiffs, against the defendant
Michael Jackson.
The cause of action speaks for itself. However, the com-
plaint was graphic in its detailed description of the acts which
it alleged that Michael Jackson committed against the minor.
The complaint alleged that said acts occurred in the county of
