What is your perfect art day in New York?
Let me tell you something, the perfect art day in New York involves a slice of pizza and a cold beer. And then just let this city do it’s magic. You don’t need to go to galleries or to museums. It’s all out there on the streets. All you need to do is to just look - maybe bring a cam- era or some paper and a pen, you never know when inspiration kicks in and you don’t want to miss out on that. As I said,
I used to sell my prints in Union Square and did popup’s from a van we parked in front of Gagosian gallery for a couple months. Man, did they try hard to get rid of us. Larry came down a couple times and was always nice. His people on the other hand tried very hard - there’s a no parking sign there now. It’s our sign!
Final insight on navigating the New York art market?
I always say, “I’m not part of the one per-
cent, I just sell to them.” We’ve heard the same thing from the biggest collectors in the world to random people on the street, after they buy our work, they come back and tell us, “Every time we look at this work, we see you.” That, my friend, is the greatest compliment. You have to believe in your work. But first, you need good work! If you don’t have good work, no one’s gonna buy it, and you have to be able to speak to people, and you have to be tenacious.
