LIVES AND WORKS IN NEW YORK
Now, I’m working as project manager at ArtBridge and grant assistant at Queens Council on the Arts. One thing that I like about doing two part- time jobs (you know, first year in NYC, survival 101) is that I get to work with artists in different ways, and get a better understanding of the role of public art as part of urban planning and community building from both an individual, organizational, and state/city legislator perspectives.
How do you like the art scene in New York?
I LOVE it! The people and the city itself never bored me for a single day. Well, I could be biased, as I’ve only been living here for 10 months. But really, I always meet interesting people who are doing incredible things. And often after grouping all these people together, they (or rather, we) end up doing amazing projects together.
Can you briefly talk about the Chinatown Street art project? What was the highlight?
Again, this project happened due to some coincidences. A friend of mine who works for the Chinatown BID told me about an open call for the Summer Street Public Art Program, initiated by the Department of Transportation. I always believe that artists are the key to success of a public art project. Through a friend, I got to know Dongfan Chen, a Chinese or Asian-American artists who had large scale public art ex- perience. Dongfan is an emerging artist based in Hangzhou and NYC. Eventually, our proposal was selected for this project.
I could talk about this project for an hour nonstop (lol) simply because [25]
