floating in a blue sky and not a still-life, it was beautiful tho. And the galleries play along because they need to make money in order to afford the real estate. Not just in Manhattan but also at the art fairs like Art Basel Miami - a small booth can cost them around $200,000 and so they need to sell the “typical” things and not the mi- norities. (Miami!) I’m not going this year.
What is your perfect art day in New York?
That would be going to a museum and drawing there. To fully experience art you have to engage with the object you are looking at - and only when you create you can understand. Many people pad them-
selves on the back when going through a museum and spotting that “this is a Picas- so” or “that is a Rothko”; and they think that they engage with the art - but do they really? Do they really understand what they are looking at? I also enjoy gallery openings - on occasion.
Sometimes museums - have you seen the Micronesian section at the Met? Museums are great but inspiration can just come about anywhere; and then all I want is to get back to my studio and create more things. I used to like MoMA but it’s to crowded these days - so I prefer the Met. The “Modern” has a nice restaurant tho.
