CHELSEA
If there is one centre for art in New York, then it is Chelsea (even with places like the Lower East Side and Bushwick competing for it’s spot). Over 200 galleries reside in this part of the city alone and so do many artists with their studios. The neighborhood started to rise to it’s current heights after Soho became too commercial and too ex- pensive for many galleries and artists. In some sense time has caught up to it and Chelsea might run the risk of following Soho’s footsteps with some artists and (smaller) galleries being forced out of the area.
