Do other New York artists inspire you?
I was never really a group person - you can see how these group studio spaces in Brooklyn influence all the artists from these studios. That is why I try not to hang out with other artists and stay true to my own work. There is also an art society and traditionally artists were members; these days the guys there think they are artists but they are amateurs. Art schools made people believe they can be artists and potentially anyone can be an artist. However, I think that trauma makes artists; for example, when I lost my eyesight on one eye something was triggered that made me want to create and this comes from within. There’s now even engineers who decide to become artists. Or computer guys! This mixing of media and sometimes theatre and performance is fascinating on a primary level - humans look- ing at humans. It’s something that gives you awareness of yourself.
