7. The Pronoun
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.
Read the following sentences :
Mr Ramesh is the warden of Jai Singh Hostel. Mr Ramesh is loved by all the
students. The students gave Mr Ramesh a present.
Now, read these sentences :
Mr Ramesh is the warden of Jai Singh Hostel. He is loved by all the students.
They gave him a present.
The words he , they and him are used in place of Mr Ramesh and the students to
avoid repetition. They are called pronouns .

1. Personal Pronouns
A pronoun that stands for a person or a thing is called a personal pronoun .
Personal pronoun has three persons :
(i) The pronouns which refer to the person or persons speaking are called
pronouns of the First Person .
Example : am a software engineer.
