2 BRIGHT AS THE SUN
Paula and Maw-Maw Solange 1966
We grew up in a loving, caring home. Our parents loved each other
and showed their affection. Our mother nurtured us and tended to us.
When we were young, we didn’t do any chores. Our mom did every-
thing singlehandedly. When we returned home from school each day,
she had a hot meal waiting for us.
While Mom stayed home, Dad
worked in the oilfield for Shell, Tenneco,
and Chevron. He managed a production
platform and spent time offshore, most-
ly working seven days on and seven days
off. When he was at home, he would
converse with Paula and me, tell us sto-
ries, or take us camping.
Dad, Mom, Paula, and I traveled
in our camper. Our parents took us
to Texas to visit relatives or Panama
Beach, Florida frequently. I credit
