Title: Technology Transformation of the Rail Industry in a Highly Competitive Global Market
Abstract: The rail industry is experiencing a notable technology transformation during the last
decade. This presentation introduces the technology advances in recent years and identifies
the future R&D needs. Issues, procedures and current practices as they relate to automation of
construction equipment, inspection technology, and remote monitoring of signal devices,
among others, are discussed.
J. Tod Echler
Biography: J. Tod Echler is the Assistant Vice President Engineering of CSX Transportation.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Assistant Vice
Cincinnati in 1984. His railroad career spans over 30 years. He started as a Management President,
Trainee with the Chessie System Railroad in 1984, just a couple of years after the company Engineering
had merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation, and he has been
with the company since then. He gained technical and management experience in railroads CSXT
as he rose from the ground up to the senior positions. Since joining CSX he has served in

ment, including Assistant Project Engineer, Project Engineer, Assistant Roadmaster, Roadmas-
