WHAT’S iN STOCK THESE DAYS?
Rare and vintage yarns for textile artists, alongside ethical and fair trade strings, raffia and other natural craft supplies.
IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS...?
I was really interested in opening an online store for natural and ethical craft supplies, without being so hippie about it. This combined with a love of tracking down unusual materials (like vintage yarns!) led to creating String Harvest, originally with my sister. After I moved to Queensland in 2015 I ran the business solo from home, and then this April, an opportunity to move in downstairs from a craft workshop came up and I jumped. My studio/showroom has plenty of storage and bench space for packing online orders, and a display wall that caters to drop-in customers.
WHERE TO BUY YARNS?
Habu Textiles store in Kyoto but I fear it might be gone by the time you read this!
ALWAYS SOLD OUT?
2 things: Natural Madagascan raffia and cotton string.
YARN movement, going where?
I love the renewed sense of diversity in the yarn scene as the next generation of artisans and business owners offer alternatives to the big yarn ‘supermarkets’. Many businesses are very small yet thriving with a strong sense of community, and social media has been great for promoting this. -x-
