5. Consider the diction of this essay. What effect does Gregory’s repetition of the word shame have on you? Why
do you think Gregory uses simple vocabulary to narrate this particular experience?
“Shame” This word makes me think about the moments in which I have felt with fear of receiving insults or acts of my
friends.
Gregory uses a simple vocabulary to acquaint us with the story he is telling us.
6. How does society still continue to use negativity to keep people down? Why do people feel the need to point out
those who have less or who are different?
Society is a world where people with more economic resources have power over poor people.
People with more economic resources try to depress people who are poor so that they do not try to improve themselves
and thus always being mediocre people will always have power over them.
7. Describe a time when you have been made to feel insignificant? How does that experience help you to feel
empathy toward Gregory?
When I was in school, my parents had few financial resources. They bought me bigger institutional uniforms, because
for lack of money they could not buy my size, my classmates bothered me because of how I looked and I felt very bad
about it.
That experience helps me feel Gregory's story as if it were mine because I know what it feels like to be rejected and
humiliated.
8. In what ways could Dick Gregory be considered an outlier?
Dick Gregory could be considered atypical because he gets away from people because he is embarrassed.
