Fun Facts
1) Each Blue Angel plane is numbered. The Boss (commanding officer) always flies Jet 1.
2) The Blue Angels planes are only 18 inches apart during the Diamond 360 maneuver.
3) The cost of a Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet is approximately $21 million dollars.
4) The planes will reach a maximum speed of 700 mph during the Air Show.
5) The Boss must have at least 3,000 tactical jet flight hours.
6) The name Blue Angels was picked by the original team when they were planning a show
in New York and came across a famous nightclub with the name in the New Yorker Magazine.
7) The Blue Angels added Fat Albert in 1970 to help get crew and spare parts to help fix the
jets on the road. For every show, the Blue Angels take approximately 25 support personnel.
8) Each pilot must perform 120 training flights during the offseason in order to perform for
the public.
9) Since 1946, the Blue Angels have had 242
demonstration pilots and 34 flight leaders/
commanding officers.
10) The average age of a Blue Angel pilot is
33 years old.
