INTRODUCTION : This folder is all about the gorillas. We needed to write this as a part
of our assignments. Our teacher gave us some handouts to read and after that we had
to do the rest of the work. We read the book called Changing the World by Dian Fossey
and the main facts about gorillas too. This work is based on the book, handout and
some independent research.
LIFESPAN: Gorillas in general live to the age of 25 years. They live to the maximum of
50 years. Their lifespan can shorten by poaching, wildfire, and loss of habitat by
deforestation. Poachers hunt gorillas for easy money. Poachers kill gorillas for three
main reasons. Trophies, collections and meat. They take their hands, feet, skin and
heads for their collection. Poaching reduces gorillas lifespan and population as well.
Loss of Habitat- There are different reasons for the loss of gorillas’ habitat. It directly
affects their lifespan. They can lose their habitats because of woodcutters, wildfire,
deforestation for agricultural purposes, building homes in the jungles etc. Woodcutters
cut trees which are home to many woodland creatures like gorillas. Wildfire is another
cause and sometimes it kills the gorillas and other creatures. Increasing human
population is another reason for the loss of habitat as people go to the woods, cut down
trees so that they can grow crops and settle down. This is the leading cause of the loss
of the habitat.
Humans- Humans are the main culprit for the extinction of gorillas. We humans give out
diseases, spread the diseases, we kill them, we burn their homes etc.
HABITAT: Gorillas typically live in the lowland tropical rainforest in Central Africa,
although some subspecies are found in Montane rainforest (in between 1,500 and 3,500
meters). They are also found in Bamboo Forests (between 2,500 to 3,000 meters. ) The
two gorilla species live in equatorial Africa. Gorillas live in family groups, usually of 1 to
50 lead by a silverback gorilla who is the leader.
PHYSICAL FEATURES: The largest living primates, gorillas are stocky animals with big
chests, and large shoulders, large hands and forearms that are much shorter than the
