unappreciated. As every kid knows, too much downtime just gets boring and there are only so
many days in a row you can wear your pajamas.
The next time you say kiddush I invite you to pay extra attention to the words we say and think
about why we call shabbat both “zikaron le-ma’ase bereishit,” a commemoration of the days of
creation, AND “zekher li-zi’at miztrayim,” a reminder of the going out from Egypt. For me these
phrases teach us to think about shabbat as part of a week-long structure that includes BOTH work
and rest.
