Apostrophes to Show

               Possession

2 Use apostrophes to show possession.

If you could not use apostrophes to show possession, you would

have to rely on long, tedious constructions such as “I drove the car of

my father to the house of Ray to study for the test of tomorrow,”

instead of “I drove my father’s car to Ray’s house to study for

               tomorrow’s test.”

               Making Nouns Possessive

There are two rules for making nouns possessive.

Rule 1: Add an apostrophe and s (’s) to form the possessive of

singular nouns and of plurals that do not end in s.
