               Learning Objectives

               In this chapter, you will learn how to

               1 Identify direct and indirect quotations appropriately in your

                        writing.
               2 Identify titles appropriately in your writing.

               Quotation marks, italics, and underlining are
               visual signals that give a reader information that

               would otherwise have to be conveyed in words.

               They say, “Someone is speaking or thinking”;

               “These words are a title of a long work”; or “These

               words are the title of a short work.” Quotation
               marks, italics, and underlining are a kind of

               academic shorthand that enhances your ability to

               communicate within the academic world.
