Quotation marks, italics, and underlining are
visual signals that give a reader information that
would otherwise have to be conveyed in words.
They say, “Someone is speaking or thinking”;
“These words are a title of a long work”; or “These
words are the title of a short work.” Quotation
marks, italics, and underlining are a kind of
academic shorthand that enhances your ability to
communicate within the academic world.
