quotation marks.
Examples
Truman said that he had lost his best pen.
Truman said he had lost his best pen.
The two examples above are indirect quotations. They do not repeat
Truman’s exact words (Truman did not use the words he and his). The
word that is stated in the first example and implied in the second.
Therefore, no quotation marks are used.
Practice 29-3 Recognizing Direct and
Indirect Quotations
On the line provided, label each quotation direct (D) or indirect (I). Put
quotation marks around direct quotes.
1. Earl said, I might have gotten a better grade on the
test if I had read the book.
2. Earl said that he might have gotten a better grade on
the test if he had read the book.
3. The customer at table five said she needed extra
salad dressing.
4. The bumper sticker said, My other car is a piece of
junk, too.
