3. The lettuce on the sandwich I ate for lunch was
                        wilted.

                                           4. After work, I waved goodbye to my carpool,

reached into my pocket, and realized I had forgotten my keys.

                                           5. I remembered leaving an upstairs window

unlocked, so I brought a ladder from the carport and set it

                        against the house.
                                           6. I covered my neat shirt and tie with an old black

sweatshirt I had left in the carport.

                                           7. My house is painted blue, but the previous color,

a quiet gray, may really have been a better choice.

                                           8. I placed the ladder against the house and

                        climbed toward the window.
                                           9. Just as I reached the top of the ladder, I heard a

polite but firm voice ask, “Are you the homeowner?”

                                           10. I looked down and saw a uniformed officer.

                                           11. The officer asked if I had any identification.

Fortunately, my wallet and driver’s license were in my pocket.
                                           12. The picture on my license is unflattering and

does not capture my good looks.

                                           13. As I showed the officer my license, she

explained that there had been burglaries in the neighborhood

                        recently.
                                           14. Crimes of all types are rising across the United

                        States.

                                          15. It felt strange to be a suspect, if only temporarily.
