Lenny Bruce’s trial provides a real-world example of the use of
the writing techniques outlined in this chapter : definition,
classification, and process. First, prosecutors had to define
obscenity. Next, material from Lenny Bruce’s act had to be
reviewed to see if it could be classified as obscene. Finally
came the process of laying out the evidence in a courtroom
trial.
Reflect on It
Every profession limits and orders the work of its members in
some way. Think about your own profession. What part of your
job might require you to define something, classify something
to show how it fits into a larger picture, or explain a process?
