               Learning Objectives

In this chapter, you will learn how to

1 Distinguish between action and linking verbs.

2 Identify the verb and the subject of a sentence.

3 Recognize irregular verbs and use them correctly.

If there were no verbs or subjects, the top two

items in the list of traditional journalists’ questions
would be eliminated. Verbs tell what was done,

while subjects tell who or what the sentence is

               about.

The verb of a sentence carries the action, if any,

and directs that action to and from the other words

in the sentence. Some verbs, called linking
verbs, function as connectors of related words.
