I can’t recall the exact moment when my cat Molly become the true
2
head of the household. Molly came to me as a tiny, defenseless
kitten, the neighbor who convinced me to take Molly said that she was
3
the runt of the litter, the kitten that no one wanted. She stood
4
trembling in a cardboard box. Looking up through moist, blue-green
eyes and mouthing the first of many silent meows that soon reduced me
5
to a lowly member of her entourage. Over the past few months, the
trembling kitten has growed strong and sure, quickly gaining control
6
of the family. She meow loudly if left alone for long without
7
attention. Molly will not be ignored; she hops into my lap and looks
8 9
offended. If I don’t drop everything and pay attention to her. In
the morning, she slides a paw under the bedroom door and rattle it
10
loudly to awaken her human servants if breakfast is late. She
refuses to eat inexpensive store-brand cat food; instead, she insist
11
on small, expensive cans of name-brand food. If she wants to come
in or go out, her meow takes on a demanding tone it almost sounds as
12
if she is saying, “Now!” Molly commands naturally and without a
second thought, the timid, trembling kitten is gone forever.
