               Place the listed modifier in the sentence to make each sentence

               match its intended meaning. The first one is done for you.



                    1.  The distraught mother believed her child was gravely ill.

                        Modifier to insert: only


                        Intended meaning: No one but the mother believed it.



                        New sentence: Only the distraught mother believed her child
                        was gravely ill.




                    2.  Kim ate a whole bucket of popcorn at the movies.

                        Modifier to insert: nearly


                        Intended meaning: She ate all but a handful or two.


                        New sentence:







                    3.  Simon’s reading speed test shows that he reads 400 words per

                        minute.

                        Modifier to insert: almost


                        Intended meaning: He reads 394 words per minute.
