Learning Objectives
In this chapter, you will learn how to
1. Use language appropriate to particular situations.
2. Avoid slang and textspeak in academic writing.
3. Avoid clichés in writing.
4. Avoid wordiness in writing.
5. Avoid conversational constructions in academic writing.
Would Shakespeare have chosen the words
above to describe slang or textspeak? Probably
not. Shakespeare enjoyed language in all its
forms. He also knew that different types of
language had different uses. If the Bard of Avon
were alive and attending college with you today,
he might send you a text that said “LOL! Srsly,
dude?” but he would never use textspeak in his
history research paper.
