1 My Aunt Susie has been trying to lose weight she calls it “the battle

of the bulge” for at least forty years. She says that weight control
has changed in three ways over the years the foods allowed, the

role of calorie counting, and the emphasis on exercise. When she first
began trying to lose weight, her family physician who has since

retired told her to cut out all breads. Dr Smith told her to eat plenty
of protein, including bacon and beef. Now, bread is allowed on diets

however, meats are limited. Aunt Susie also remembers making lists
and writing down every calorie she ate: one carrot, 25 calories one
chocolate chip cookie, 100 calories one slice of bread, 60 calories.
6 When she went on her latest diet, she asked, “Should I count calories

” Her nutritionist told her that today, the emphasis is on watching fat
