A PERT chart is another form of network diagram. The nodes (usually rectangles)
represent milestones, the lines represent the sequence of tasks, the numbers near the
lines represent the duration of the tasks. Figure 5.4 shows a simple PERT chart.

FIGURE 5.4 A sample PERT chart

Keep in mind that most project managers use some combination of estimating
     techniques to determine task durations.

You will not likely encounter questions on the exam regarding how to
calculate three-point estimates or PERT estimates, but there could be questions
       about the techniques in general.

Now that you know their durations and dependencies, you can establish start and end
dates for each task and construct the project schedule. You’ll look at that next.

       The Bathroom Remodel Project

You have been assigned to manage the bathroom remodel project for your
building. All restrooms will undergo a remodel, including the two large restrooms
in the basement that also have lockers and showers.

Team members from the facilities department will be working on this project
along with a contractor who was hired to perform the plumbing work. Some of the
major deliverables include removing all the old fixtures and stalls, removing the

existing tile, reconfiguring the space to add additional wheelchair-accessible stalls
in each restroom, removing the old lockers, and installing all-new fixtures, stalls,
       counters, sinks, showers, and lockers.

You work with the team members from the facilities department to break down the
tasks from each work package level. They inform you of predecessor activities,
