Before we continue adding whole numbers, let’s review some properties of
addition that you may have already discovered. The first property that we will
review is the addition property of 0. This property reminds us that the sum of 0 and
any number is that same number.

              Addition Property of 0

The sum of 0 and any number is that number. For example,
                  7 + 0 = 7
                  0 + 7 = 7

Next, notice that we can add any two whole numbers in any order and the sum is
            the same. For example,

                 4 + 5 = 9 and 5 + 4 = 9

We call this special property of addition the commutative property of addition.

              Commutative Property of Addition
Changing the order of two addends does not change their sum. For example,

                 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5

Another property that can help us when adding numbers is the associative
property of addition. This property states that when adding numbers, the grouping
of the numbers can be changed without changing the sum. We use parentheses to
group numbers. They indicate which numbers to add first. For example, let’s use two
            different groupings to find the sum of 2 + 1 + 5.
                (2+1)+5=3+5=8

            Also,
                                                                                        Answer
                                                                                        2. 120,341
                2+(1+5)=2+6=8
                                                                                          Concept Check Answer

Both groupings give a sum of 8. hundreds place
