CERTIFICATION OBJECTIVE 2.01

Similarities and Differences Between Cloud Computing and
               Outsourcing

Cloud computing is about IT capabilities that are “rented” instead of
“owned.” These IT capabilities are delivered from a third-party service

provider over a network, as shown in Figure 2-2. The consumer of cloud
services uses the provider’s hardware and software, which is located at the
provider’s facilities. The provider owns and maintains the hardware and
software. The consumer and provider may be linked via the public Internet
or a proprietary connection. Cloud computing does not mandate a specific
technical implementation. It is about the use of technology, not the
configuration of technology. As such, it is a business model and not a

               specific technology.

FIGURE 2-2 Cloud computing is about IT capabilities delivered as a
               service over a network.
