VALE F1 legend Sir Frank Williams
Sir Francis Owen Garbett Williams CBE was a British businessman, racing car driver, and the founder of the Williams Formula One team. He was the team principal from its foundation in 1977 until 2020. During that period, the team won nine constructors' championships and seven drivers' championships.
Sir Frank took his motor racing team from an empty carpet warehouse to the summit of Formula 1, overseeing 114 victories, a combined 16 drivers' and constructors' world championships, while becoming the longest-serving team boss in the sport's history.
Famous drivers for the Williams team include Piers Courage (killed in the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix), Australian driver Alan Jones, Clay Regazzoni, Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, and Ayrton Senna who was killed at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
Whilst driving in the South of France in 1986 Sir Frank suffered spinal injuries in a devastating crash which confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life but did not keep him away from the tracks.
Sir Frank was knighted by The Queen in 1999 but his team was never able to replicate its heyday of the 1980s and 1990s.
He stepped back in 2013, the year in which his wife died, allowing his daughter Claire to assume the day-to- day running of the team.
The Williams family contested its 739th and concluding race after selling up to Dorilton Capital.
Sir Frank is survived by his three
