Eli Tomac and his training partner/father John must wake up at the crack of dawn for all of their mountain bike rides, because Eli was looking right at home during the early morning practice at St. Louis. He put his Monster Energy Kawasaki at the top of the timed qualifying with more than half
a second separating himself and 2nd placed Trey Canard. He looked comfortable on his Kawasaki, attacking the track and especially the sand section just like it was Daytona Beach. Tomac hoped that the first choice gate pick would allow him to break his streak of mediocre starts. Unfortunately, he lost out to the usual suspects in his heat race and found himself amidst the mid- pack again. He took advantage of a rare crash by Ryan Dungey and rounded the downed KTM in the second corner. He was able to get a good run through the first rhythm lane, make a quick pass on Pourcel on the opening lap, and cross the finish line just one spot removed from a transfer.
