With a lap time of 56.7 in his qualifier, RJ Hampshire had the 7th position on lock. Lining up with Davalos, Stewart and Bowers, Hampshire knew what he had to do to make it happen. After a slow but steady start, Hampshire had kept his eye on the top 3 riders the whole race.
Bowers would make a mistake, allowing Hampshire to slip into a podium position. A third place finish would get him a ticket directly into the main event. A rough start would require Hampshire to work his way up from 17th place. Moving up a few positions every lap, by lap 4 he broke into the top 10. Working through the pack seems to be one of Hampshire’s strengths as he made his way all the way up to 4th place by lap 15. RJ Hampshire will be in the 7th spot with 77 points after St Louis, only 3 points ahead of Shane McElrath.
