Although a lot of the talk regarding the new bike will be based around the technological gizmos and gadgets that have been added as a part of the status quo, the newly redesigned engine
is a undeniably a conversation starter. Yamaha has already been ahead of the game with their rearward-slanted cylinder design, but it’s been refined for the 2019 model. A compact starter motor and a lightweight lithium-ion battery is a standard part of the new engine in addition to the electric start -- making it possible to fire up the liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected engine in the blink of an eye. It features a forward-positioned straight downdraft intake with symmetrical intake and exhaust ports. The 44m throttle body has been lightened and the fuel passes through a new 12-hole Denso injector on it’s way to the engine. A higher-compression flat-top forged piston has been redesigned for an optimal strength-to-weight ratio, and a majority of the top end has been designed in order to reduce friction loss, providing the rider with a quick response from the wrist
to the rear wheel. The engine works in congruence to produce an improved amount of mid-to-
high range power with reasonable delivery and substantial reliability. The new cylinder is lighter and angled more upright to help centralize the rotating mass of the engine, improving stability and handling. The transmission and clutch also underwent a do-over, allowing a direct connection and improved durability, as well as the durability of the shift mechanisms and cogs. The diameter of the clutch has been increased and has been designed to help improve the feel and the durability in hot conditions. Aesthetically, the valve cover is now blue on the Team Yamaha Blue bike, making the rider feel a part of the bLU cRU more than ever before.
